Bible Text

And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.

1 Chronicles 4:9

Devotional

There is no alternative to prayer in enforcing the will of God in a man’s life. Prayer changes the course of events and gives acceleration in life through favour.

Jabez was undergoing an unpleasant situation, but he prayed and the situation was turned around. Prayer provokes divine intervention and turns a man’s captivity around for good.

The children of Israel would have remained in captivity if they had not cried unto the Lord. They were expected to be in bondage in the land of Egypt for 400 years according to prophecy, but they were in captivity with hard labour for 430 years until it dawned on them to cry unto the Lord and He came to their aid (Exodus 2:23-25).

Until you react prayerfully to any ugly situation in your life, it may not come to an end. It was when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord that He plagued the Egyptians for their release and before they left, God turned their situation around by giving them strange favour before the Egyptians. The Bible says, “And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians” (Exodus 12:36).

One day of favour made up for all the 430 years of labour. Whatever they asked of the Egyptians, they were given, without bothering to know whether they would return. When favour is at work, reasoning is suspended. If you can pray, you will swim in divine favour.

Prayer

My Father! My Father! As I begin to pray, empower me afresh to pray, I need divine favour.
